The Ultimate Used Car Buying Checklist for 2025

Buying a used car can save you thousands compared to buying new, but it comes with risks if you don't do your due diligence. Follow our comprehensive checklist to make sure you get a great deal on a reliable car.

Before You View the Car

1. Check the vehicle history - Run a full HPI/vehicle history check to verify the car hasn't been stolen, written off, or still has outstanding finance.
2. Verify the MOT history - Check the DVSA MOT history online for free. Look for recurring advisories that could indicate underlying problems.
3. Research the fair market price - Use Dream Car Trader's valuation tool to understand what the car should be worth.

At the Viewing

1. Inspect the bodywork - Look for rust, dents, mismatched paint (which could indicate accident repair), and check panel gaps are even.
2. Check the tyres - All four should have at least 3mm of tread (1.6mm is the legal minimum but 3mm is where grip drops significantly).
3. Look under the bonnet - Check for oil leaks, corroded battery terminals, and ensure fluid levels are correct.
